International joint supervision of Doctoral Thesis

WHAT IS IT?

In order to foster academic exchange, as well as to establish and strengthen relations with foreign universities, Unifesp's Graduate Programs foresee the attainment of doctorates under international co-supervision. The objective is to allow doctoral theses to be jointly oriented by professors from Unifesp and foreign universities and to grant double degrees to Brazilian and foreign students who choose this modality.

HOW TO APPLY?

In order to apply for doctoral co-tutelage, the guiding professor of the candidate at UNIFESP must express an interest to the Office of International Affairs (SRI), provided that they have already come to an agreement on the interest and possibility of co-tutelage with the professor of the foreign university. The institution of choice may be one of our current international partners or not, as long as there is a formal agreement to support the candidate's co-responsibility before the effective start of activities. In case of inexistence of a previous agreement, a new one can be done in two ways: it may consist of an academic cooperation agreement with a clause of co-tutelage between the institutions, which provides for the candidacy of PhD students for co-orientation and double degree; or, individually, consist of a cooperation agreement that deals only with the doctoral co-tutelage of a specific student. The choice between one of these formats depends on the agreements that we may already have with the partner universities, and also on the interest of the advisors and institutions in each case.

NORMS AND DOCUMENTS

As for the documentation required to open the application process for Agreements and Doctoral Co-tutelage, click here to download the check list and procedural explanations in Portuguese. Through the "General Cooperation Agreements with Cotutelles prevision", Unifesp and the foreign institution will sign the agreement without specifying the name of the participant, and for each candidate to co-orientation a “Term of Commitment” of adhesion to the agreement must be signed. In order to facilitate this co-operation instruction, SRI makes available the draft model of this agreement, in three languages:

Model of General Agreement with coutelle in Portuguese - French

Model of General Agreement with coutelle in Portuguese - English

Model of General Agreement with coutelle in Portuguese - Spanish

Through the "Individual Agreements of Cotutelle", Unifesp and the foreign institution sign the agreement on the activity of the participant and, for this modality, we do not provide a standard draft template. We suggest that you ask the foreign institution and consult us about the content.

The rules governing covenants and simultaneous degree of Unifesp describe, among other aspects, the items and information that the “General Agreements” and the “Individual Agreements of Cotutelle” should contain regarding the students, the thesis and the defense.
