The stricto sensu graduate, Paulista Nursing School, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, began in 1978. The current Nursing Graduate Program was redesigned in 2008, and offers training in the levels of master's degree, doctoral and post-doctoral. The program has the scope to prepare masters, PhDs and postdocs able to expand, consolidate and disseminate the science of nursing, promoting transformative practices and disseminating education and research, contributing individually and collectively in social political and ethical issues, improving the quality of population health and care.

OUR MISSION: Our objective is to be a center of excellence in the education of researchers, leaders and qualified professionals to advance the science of Nursing and Health, with emphasis on multidimensional approach to people and groups in their different expressions.

OUR VALUES: The Graduate Nursing Program has as basic concept that the human being has privileges and rights that must be respected, and that the right to the life and health are essential to the self-realization. The program realize that the nursing focuses on the health care in the individual and collective perspective, by mean of a knowledge that integrates the bases: scientific, personal / interpretive, critical, ethical, aesthetic and sociopolitical. These bases support and guide the knowledge production that contributes to the innovative and transformative professional practice.

OUR AIMS: To graduate masters, doctors and post-doctors able to: integrate the foundations of knowledge in research, teaching and extension in Nursing and Health Sciences; using different philosophical and theoretical perspectives and methodologies to building, expanding, consolidating and disseminating the Nursing and Health Sciences, contributing individually and collectively to improve the care and health of the population; and sharing ideas and integrating projects beyond institutional boundaries.

History of the Program


The Graduate Nursing Program, Paulista Nursing School, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, began in 1978 and for three decades contributes to the education of masters, doctors and post-doctors, adding value to the production of knowledge in the field of Nursing and Health Sciences in the national and international scenario. This program initiated with the Master in Pediatric Nursing in 1978, followed by the Obstetrical Nursing in 1980 and Nursing in Adult Health in 1989. Doctoral Course in Maternal and Child health Nursing initiated in 1986. The major change occurred in 1996 when the three Masters courses were unified with area of concentration, and the doctorate in Maternal and Child health Nursing was changed to Doctorate in Nursing with only one program, which analyzed by researchers showed positive results. Another change occurred in 2002, merging the existing areas of concentration into one, referred as Fundamentals of Nursing and Practices in Health Disease Process. In 2005, other professionals begin to be included in the program, and unifies the master degree and doctorate in science. Later in 2008, the current configuration is established.

Master's degree

Stricto sensu graduate level, aims to educate teachers capable of exercise teaching in nursing, promoting the improvement of education and assistance by mean of innovative methods and techniques; developing research activities; and disseminating the produced knowledge for the scientific community and society. The master degree student student must elaborate a thesis, on which will be examined on the selected issue of the topic chosen and ability to systematize. In addition to the written of the dissertation, the students must taking disciplines related to their area of concentration, and be submitted to a validation of English language readings skills The minimum time for the completion of the master education is of 12 months and the maximum time of 48 months. on is established.

Postdoctoral degree

Stricto sensu graduate level followed up the doctoral degree, conducted under the supervision of a researcher with experience and demonstrated competence in leading research projects and proven quality, regularity and highlight in the scientific and technological production in the area. This program aims to develop researchers able to generate, expand, consolidate and disseminate the scientific knowledge of Nursing and Health; contributing to the development of new researchers; and strengthening the activities of the research groups.

Doctorate degree

Stricto sensu graduate level, which aims to educate researchers capable of conducting research to generate, expand, consolidate and disseminate scientific knowledge of Nursing and Health; contributing to the development of nursing science and other Health sciences; and creating or strengthening research groups.

During the doctoral course, the doctoral students must publicly defend dissertation characterized as an innovative research that contributes, in an original way for the generation of knowledge in Nursing and Health, and must taking disciplines related to their area of concentration, to be submitted to to partial and general tests, and validation of English language readings skills The doctoral program has minimum of 24 and maximum of 84 months.
