The PROAD
(Program of Orientation and Assistance to Addicts) is a special program
of the
Psychiatry Department of
Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Our institution
treats substance-related disorders, as well as non-chemical addiction
such as gambling and compulsive sex.
Unlike most other substance abuse facilities, PROAD focus not only on
the similar conditions of the patients, but also emphasizes their
uniqueness and individuality.
PROAD’s practice aims for more than just removal of the patients’
symptoms and certain behavior patterns. Instead of being concerned
primarly with disruptive behaviors, PROAD’s main target is the
complete individual.
PROAD develops activities in four sectors: Teaching, Research,
Prevention and Assistance. The sectors of Prevention, Research and
Teaching (including professional training) are linked to sponsored
projects. The Assistance activities are developed by volunteers.
PROAD has a multidisciplinary staff which includes psychiatrists,
psychologists, family therapists, occupational therapists, social
workers, trainees and a receptionist. The majority of the staff members
have specialized degrees, as well as masters and PhDs, from renowned
institutions in Brazil and abroad. Some of our members or projects are
sponsored by post-graduate scholarships or partnerships established with
Ministry of Health. The staff holds supervisory meetings on a regular
basis to discuss assistance techniques and practice for chemical and
non-chemical addiction.
Through a partnership with the General Hospital of Diadema (administered
by UNIFESP), since 2001, PROAD manages a ward equipped with 10
beds for specialized hospitalization of addicts.
